TVET work based experience

The Department of Higher Education and Training has identified the need to enable public TVET Colleges to become the preferred providers of occupational skills, in South Africa. This will serve to address the high unemployment rate for those between the ages of 16 and 34.

Work experience is assumed to be the missing link that once present, will enhance employability and increase the chances of success in the working world. This is thought to be true if the work experience in question is:

  • Related to and supports their field of study.
  • Obtained in an environment with processes and structures in place to coach and mentor each learner.
  • Obtained in the environment of a reputable employer.
  • Of an adequate length to allow sufficient time to gain exposure and experience in a number of generic and specific skills.
